How to Sew Ruffles on Sleeves

how to sew ruffles on sleeves

Lately, I've been obsessed with ruffles. Okay, well I've pretty much always been obsessed with ruffles. I'm a girly girl at heart, so ruffles are a must for my wardrobe. Ruffles are actually a great addition to anyone's wardrobe. They add just the right amount of flair to any outfit, no matter what your style is. :)

If you'd like to add a ruffle or two to your closet, it's really easy to do so. In addition to ruffles, I also love stripes, so I decided to play around with some stripes to refashion this ruffle dress.

If you'd like to add flounces to your sleeves instead, check out this tutorial.

STEPS:

1. Measure your sleeve opening.

2. This is how you will cut out your ruffles:

Length (pink dots): Decide on the length of your ruffles.
For this refashion, I wanted mine to be 5" and I added 1" for seam allowance and hemming.
Sleeve Opening x 2 and x 2 again (purple dots): Take the measurement from Step 1 and double it, twice.
For this refashion, my sleeve opening was 7", so 7 x 2 = 14 x 2 = 28".

At this point, I had hemmed my strips of fabric, but you can hem your ruffles until the very end.

3. Sew your strip of fabric together, right sides facing.
Then, sew a gathering stitch along the top.

4. Gather your ruffle until it fits your sleeve opening.

5. Pin and sew your ruffle, right sides facing together.

That's it! You have some new awesome ruffles! :)
