How to Alter a Denim Skirt If it's Too Big

Hello! Today's sewing tutorial is for all my skirt ladies who have a skirt they love, but it's just too big, so it never gets worn.

I got this Gap skirt from the Like Twice app. (sign up with this link to get a $10 credit & 50% your entire first purchase!) Anyways, sorry for sidetracking there LOL. On to the tutorial! :)

So as you can already tell, this skirt was too big for me. Even if I wore it with a belt, it wouldn't look good since the hip area was too big as well.

First measure your skirt and yourself.

Skirt Measurements:

- Waist: 15 1/4" across
- Hips: 17" across
(Hips are around the pocket area. You can try on your skirt to determine where the hips are. Remember the hips are the widest part of your bottom!)

My Measurements:

- Waist: 14 3/4" across
- Hips: 16 1/2"
(Just divide by 2 if you measured yourself all around. You can also just measure a skirt that fits you really good and use those measurements!)

Next, do the math :)

15 1/4" - 14 3/4" =  1/2"
17" - 16 1/2" = 1/2"

So I took off 1/2" from the waist and hips of the skirt.

Now, grab a seam ripper and rip the stitches on both sides of the waistband, where it connects to the skirt.

If your skirt is too big in the hip area too, sew off as much as you need to. Stop sewing after the hip area, unless you want to tighten the hem of the skirt as well.

This next part gets a little tricky. Turn the waistband inside out and pin as shown. You're going to sew off as much as you need to.

Cut the excess fabric, and turn back inside.

Stitch down on the waistband while grabbing the skirt.
(Where you ripped the seams)

That's it!

  4. I "accidentally" discovered your site today when I was looking for instructions on how to take in the waist of a denim skirt...yours was the only site I visited and your instructions were great--I got it done in about an hour (lined waistband) and it fits perfectly! The rest of your stuff looks terrific and I will certainly be looking at other projects you've done! I was also thrilled to see that you are also a "Christ-lover." :-D Thank you so much and God bless!! :-) Kathryn
